SAVE OUR SPACES: Prosfygika Fundraiser Gig

In The Squatted Community of προσφυγικα (Prosfygika), comradeship, communal property, solidarity, mutual aid, and collective care are not just empty words but a lived practice in everyday reality.

It has existed as a unique self-administered and liberated neighbourhood in the heart of Athens for 16 years. In its 8 building blocks, 400 inhabitants from 27 different countries, speaking 20 different languages, with different religions, ideologies, ages, and backgrounds, not only live but struggle and organise together. Structures like a communal bakery, a children’s structure, an autonomous women’s structure, a health structure and open assemblies have been built over the years.

Prosfygika is a striking example of a place where the universal struggle for justice, dignity and self-determination has materialised. We understand the importance and necessity of such grounds, whether we travel to physically join the struggle or find inspiration and strength in knowing the collective heartbeat of resistance is alive.

Today, the community stands in direct opposition to the Greek state’s “redevelopment” plan, which seeks to displace its inhabitants and repurpose the prime urban space in central Athens as part of their broader gentrification effort. To protect their rights, their community and their living space, as well as the historical and collective memory of the buildings (which are listed as a monument of modern history), the community has proposed its own phased renovation plan. This would allow all residents to remain on site and the historic building to be safely preserved and renovated.

We ask for your financial support to continue with collective works and support for its defence. It is our revolutionary duty to create and defend communities against the violence of the state and capital wherever we are. Be it in Prosfygika, in Rojava, in Palestine, in Chiapas, such struggles can teach us how to survive communally.
